Odunsi the Engine
Alté Cruise is an alternative genre stemming out of Nigeria that is reminiscent of R&B, Y2K soundscapes. Odunsi the Engine is a pioneer in the genre, his songs – "Star signs, Gangsta Fear" were defining moments in the scene which gained global recognition and love for a different sound & row of artists from Nigeria that didn't follow the typical Afrobeats route.
As many might wonder about the origin of alias, “The Engine”, it was a friendly nickname during his high school years and it carries no grand meaning; just something that fit well. There’s been a gradual sense of momentum to his journey. What began as making music with friends, limited by resources back then, evolved into something far more self-sufficient. By 2016, OTE had started producing his own records and crafting tunes for others, including close collaborator Santi, marking the beginning of a more defined sonic identity.
That same year, he released his first EP, followed by his debut album, rare., two years later in 2018. His music not only resonated widely but also helped cement his place at the forefront of the alté wave. Subsequent projects, including a collaborative EP with Nonso Amadi and a solo release in 2020, continued to expand his reach while staying rooted in a distinct and personal sound.
OTE’s music is difficult to neatly categorise. It pulls from across eras and geographies—Afro-pop, R&B, funk, disco and the shimmering textures of ‘80s indie synth-pop—all woven together with a softness that feels intentional. They echo of artists like Biggie, Aaliyah, Sade Adu, Craig David and The Lighthouse Family, alongside the unmistakable imprint of his own world. Much of this foundation traces back to his older brother, whose influence shaped Odunsi’s early listening and, in many ways, the emotional palette of his music.
